PLEASANT HILL — A grueling stretch of 54 holes in three days ended with the Marshalltown boys’ golf team taking eighth at the Southeast Polk Invite on Wednesday at Copper Creek Golf Club.
The Bobcats shot a collective score of 319 to round out a run of three meets in three days.
“We played well in stretches, but many of the guys had trouble adjusting to the greens,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson.
Marshalltown was led by senior Ty Faltys, who shot a 4-over-par 75 to place 22nd individually. Faltys shot a 3-over 38 on the front nine before carding a 1-over 37 on the back, highlighted by three birdies.
The senior Faltys shot an average score of 74.75 in four meets in the last week to lead MHS down the stretch run.
“Ty Faltys continued his steady play and put himself in good positions to attack the pins,” said Johnson.
MHS freshman Joe Greazel garnered 33rd place with his round of 78 that included an 83 on the front but a blistering 1-under 35 on the back despite a triple bogey 6 on the par-3 12th. Greazel followed that up by birdieing four of the last six holes to get under par.
A day after shooting a season-high round of 100 on his home course, Bobcat sophomore Jacob Seberger settled in as the team’s third-best scorer on Wednesday with an 82. Senior Adam Boone and sophomore Parker Christen both shot 84 to account for Marshalltown’s last counting score. Senior Eli Polley battled through back pain to put an 87 on the board as well.
“Jacob Seberger had a nice bounce-back, giving us a counting score a day after shooting his worst round of the year,” Johnson said. “Eli Polley tweaked his back during his range warmup and wasn’t able to swing 100 percent. I give him credit for sticking it out.”
Southeast Polk beat West Des Moines Valley on a fifth-score tiebreaker after both teams shot a 1-over 285. Dowling Catholic took third with a 294, led by medalist Dewell Anderson’s 3-under 68.
Marshalltown’s daunting stretch of golf gets a week off now to prepare for the Iowa Alliance Conference meet, which MHS will host on Thursday, Oct. 3, at Elmwood Country Club. The Bobcats’ district meet on Monday, Oct. 7, will be at Willow Creek Golf Course in West Des Moines.
“Thankfully we’ve got a nice stretch off to prepare for conference and then districts,” Johnson said.
